First Week of School

I have never had a busier first week of class in my life. And it's mostly because of one class. It's called "Basic Structural Design". There's nothing really "basic" about it. The first PRACTICE assignment had 26 problems on it and the first real assignment had 10 parts to it, due January 19. And we had a tutorial. We NEVER have tutorials or labs the first week. I finally finished both assignments about an hour ago, except the formal title page.

Here's a page in the assignment. Looks fun eh? We're asked to draw the normal force, shear force, and bending moment diagrams and draw the deflected shape of the beam. Ya, no one has ever taught us about hinges before. The prof just expects us to know. How thoughtful.

Now it's clean house time for our company this weekend. But I have to display my new purse first! I saw it at The Trading Post (I think???) in Fernie and really wanted it, but it's not exactly cheap. Then we received a very generous gift of the money variety so I could get it! Unfortunately, it wasn't at the store anymore. Then Leif found it on sale somewhere in Saskatoon with free shipping! And it's purple. Perfect.

Hope everyone had a nice holiday season full of pretty things!

  1. The General Store?

Isn't shear force just the mass of the potential load thats being distributed over the normal force deflecting the beam such that E-mc2, assuming a stable temperature of above 0*C?
Thats what I always thought anyway. Maybe I should take that dudes class...

  2. For all you Fernie has beens - the store is actually called Ghostrider Trading. Not to be confused with Ghostrider Motorsports. The term General Store includes all the stores in the building....Ghostrider Trading and the Bakery. I know nothing about Shear force - that diagram and explanation makes my feet feel funny. But, I do know shopping in Fernie.

    M.U.M.

P.S. Thanks for the update, by the way.
